Psychosis modifiers
A set of modifiers for people with psychosis. You do not have to use these unless you want to; they are for self identification only. Do not label anyone with one of these without their consent, thank you!
About the modifiers
The psychosis modifiers were inspired by draconarc's npd modifiers, and are meant to help people reclaim symptoms and other aspects of psychosis that are frequently mocked, demonized, or treated as dangerous. By using terms made by and for people with psychosis, it may help some come to terms with their symptoms, and "reclaim" those negative stereotypes!
Do not use these modifiers if you do not experience psychosis. This modifier list is inclusive of those who self dx, or are questioning.
The modifiers
Notes: You do not have to identify with every part of a label in order to use it. I tried my best to make each label broad enough of an identity to where you may relate to it for multiple reasons. Community made labels may be added onto this list in the future, if any are made.
If you have a schizospec disorder, you may replace "psycho" with schizo, and the ⭐(star) emoji may be used instead if you want to specify that it's schizospec. If you're not comfortable with using "psycho" as reclamation, feel free to use psychotic or any other word you prefer.
[💫🌊] Abyssal psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with vague concepts, like the void, deep space, or the ocean. This may be due to disorganized thoughts, or simply an affinity for those sorts of things. They may feel unidentifiable, vast, complex, foggy, or vague, due to their symptoms, to the point where they may not feel "human" at all, and may identify more with the concept of being a place, or concept.
[💫👽] Anomalous psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with things associated with aliens, or similar beings. This can vary from having traits that relate to them, being kin/fictive/etc., feeling alien-like, and it may tie into or be associated with being alienated from society due to one's traits.
[💫🐑] Carnal psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with some kind of animal. This can vary from having traits that relate to one, being kin/fictive/etc., feeling animalistic, and it may tie into or be associated with reclaiming one's "strange" behavior/thoughts, or those who have a closer relationship with animals than other people. (You may put any animal emoji in, if you have a specific one you relate to.)
[💫📷] Cryptic psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with cryptic things, or the idea of being an "entity". This may be specific creatures (cryptids, for instance), cryptic or distorted footage, or simply being "strange" and "confusing" for one reason or another. It may also be a way to reclaim one's disorganized thoughts, or hallucinations.
[💫🔮] Esper psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with espers, psychics, witches, or similar groups. This can vary from having traits that relate to them, being kin/fictive/etc., feeling like you have special abilities, and it may tie into or be associated with grandiose or fantastical thoughts, one's spirituality, or hallucinations.
[💫👻] Haunted psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with ghosts, or the idea of being "haunted" in some way. This can vary from having traits that relate to them, being kin/fictive/etc., feeling ghostlike, and it may tie into or be associated with how one's negative or catatonic symptoms make them feel "disconnected", or "dead".
[💫🌙] Lunar psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with the moon, the night, and similar things. This may come from a desire to reclaim the idea of "lunacy" or being a "lunatic". They may feel otherworldy, have spiritual beliefs related to the moon, or something similar.
[💫💥] Martyr psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with martyrs, usually as a reclamation. Someone with this label may reclaim the things that made them demonized in society, and identify with the idea of rebelling against what is "normal" in the first place. They may also be reclaiming the idea that they "always seem to be suffering", or "always need help,"' which is a common thing said to mentally ill people.
[💫👑] Princely psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with things associated with princes, princesses, or general royalty. This can vary from having traits that relate to them, being kin/fictive/etc., feeling royal, and it may tie into or be associated with one's grandiose delusions, fantastical delusions, or possible comorbid disorders (such as NPD.)
[💫💾] Robotic psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with things associated with robots, AI, or similar things. This can vary from having traits that relate to them, being kin/fictive/etc., feeling robotic, and it may tie into or be associated with one's flat/dull expressions and/or disorganized thoughts.
[💫☁️] Willowing psycho: A label modifier for when a psychotic person identifies with fairies, otherworldly creatures, or nature. This may be due to their spirituality, their personal interests, or they may be reclaiming the idea that psychotic people are always in their head, aloof, or "lost in the clouds."
FAQ / Questions
1. I don't have any schizospec disorders, can I still use this?
Yes, if you experience psychosis due to another disorder, like bipolar. These were formerly schizospec only, but they no longer are.
2. Why do these need to exist?
People reclaiming negative stereotypes about their disorder can feel empowering and comforting for those who have been demonized their entire lives. It is also modifiers made by and for people with psychosis, so it may describe facets of someone's identity in a way that feels less insulting.
3. Doesn't this normalize mental illness?
If by "normalize", you mean normalizing symptoms and accepting that they do not make you a bad person, a monster, or broken, then yes. If by "normalize", you mean not seeing psychosis as negativeat all, then no. Psychotic disorders and psychosis are, of course, disorders; that does not mean self identification and comfort with one's identity is a bad thing.
4. Can I make my own modifiers to add onto this one?
Yes, you can. I would prefer if you have a link to this Carrd somewhere, but it's not required. You can mention me @psychopunks if you want me to add your own modifiers to the Carrd itself.
4. Didn't these used to be schizospec only?
When I very first made, them, yes. I hadn't realized other disorders like bipolar could also cause psychosis! But I made these inclusive of all psychotic people pretty quickly after making this.
